drier. The sound of the machine curtailed further
conversation.

"What about him?" said Dannaks when the
sound died.

"Freddy asked me whether I remembered him."
"Remember him?" Some twisted code of honour
prevented Freddy from grassing directly.
Uwe nodded and Dannaks punched the blow-
drier.
Uwe returned to the mirror and combed his hair.
He still looked worried.
The blow-drier stopped. "What else?" said
Dannaks.
"He hung up mid-sentence."
"What was he about to say?"
"He didn't. When he asked me about Kabel I
said he knew I didn't like puzzles. He was about to
answer, but then just hung up."
"And then there was the redial?"
"Yeah." Announcing that he was University Clinic
Eppendorf had at most gained them some time.
"You think they're on to him?"
Uwe shrugged. "We'd better go to Detlef," he
said resignedly.
"Let's look up Kabel first."
